Among the 2000 creatures of 300 species that you can watch with your Lisbon Zoo ticket, five fall under the category of amphibians and arthropods. These 5 amphibians include- Axolotl which are severely endangered, the Red Piranha which are found in freshwater rivers and lakes of the tropics and are found very commonly in nature. Others are the Pleco and the Tomato Frog, who are known for their declining number in the world because of loss of habitat and illegal trading. Lastly, there is the Pink Tarantula which is found in Chile, Bolivia and Argentina.

The Lisbon Zoo tickets also include access to the birds sections. The Zoo houses 157 varieties of colourful tropical birds out of all the creatures living there. Some of the kinds are - Papua Hornbill, Hyacinth Macaw, Grey headed Lovebird, Cassowary, Pleated Hornbill, Green Aracari, White tailed Eagle, Griffin, Red Flamingo, Argus Pheasant, Emma and Japanese Crane. The White tailed Eagle is the largest eagle in Europe and hunts both on land and in water. The Hermit Ibis is an endangered bird, numbered to be less than 500.

Some of the exotic mammals residing in this zoo are - Hamadrias Baboon, Bennett’s Kangaroo, Java Langur, Pygmy Hippopotamus, Koala, Black - faced Impala, Brazza Monkey, Lion’s tail Macaque, Black and White collared Lemur and White nosed Macaque. The Bong and the Koala are severely endangered animals that are found in dense subtropical forests and in eucalyptus forests respectively.

Some of the reptiles are American Alligator, Brazilian Rainbow Boa, Allspice, Chuckwalla, Blue tongued Escinco, Komodo Dragon, Nile Crocodile, Cheynei Python, Eastern Serpent King and Philippine Hydrosaur. The Komodo Dragon is the biggest saurian alive and is found in tropical forests and savannas. The Philippine Hydrosaur is a semi - aquatic lizard and is found in rainforest, near water bodies.

This zone gives you an insight into the Zoo’s maintenance of natural vegetation and how it nurtures the plants. The Zoo houses a number of rare species of tree and plants like Horse Chestnut, Cica, Garden Plum, Carob Tree, Cambara, Strelicia, Dragon Tree, Hello, Quince, Pereira and Yew. The Strelicia also known as the Bird of Paradise is found on the islands of Madeira. The Cica is a similar looking plant to the small palm tree and can survive upto 100 years.
